Inspector Calls Flashcards
What does Sheila represent
Sheila allows Priestley to show his opinions on youth. He felt that there was hope in the young people of post-war Britain. He saw them as the ones who would help solve the problems the country had with class, gender and social responsibility.
What dose Eric represent
Priestley uses Eric as symbolicof redemption; no matter the atrocitiescommitted in the past, he has the capacity to change and improve. Priestley presents Eric in a sympathetic lightthrough Eric’s opposition to Mr Birling’s capitalist and individualisticattitudes.
What dose the inspector represent
The Inspector takes on the role of an omniscient(all-knowing), moral force for good. Priestley presents his character as a spiritual avenging angel. Socialistvalues and ideology are channelled through the Inspector. Priestley utilises the Inspector as a vehicle to catalysechange in perceptions of responsibility.
What does mr Birling represent
Mr Birling represents greedy businessmen who only care for themselves. Priestley uses him to show the audience that the Eva Smiths of the world will continue to suffer if people like Birling remain in positions of power.
What does Mrs birling represent
Sybil Birling, like her husband Arthur, represents a type of middle-class snobbery that existed prior to the World Wars. Priestley hoped that these sorts of attitudes would die out, and uses Mrs Birling to show how they can lead to cold and thoughtless behaviour
What does Gerald represent
Social and historical context. Priestley uses Gerald to attack the upper-classes of post-war Britain. He shows that despite outward appearances, Gerald is described as an ‘attractive chap’ and ‘well-bred’. This class of people were still capable of questionable behaviour.
What does Edna the maid represent
The Birlings’ maid, Edna, may seem insignificant but she serves as a reminder of the Birlings’ wealth and the presence of the lower classes. She also introduces the Inspector and provides insight into the life of Eva Smith since they come from a similar background
