Q

What is one way shown in the book that Mr Birling only cares about his buisness and not anything else?

A

Mr Birling has quiet a few of these things in his character where h is only aware of himself and his buisness rather than caring about his own family where there are a lot of gaps missing especially in he children’s education at the start of the play. He always looked to invite and care /talk to Gerald who was part of the Royal family about buisness and the way his family takes care of these type of things. Mr Birling thought his family was one of these families Gerald had because of the house the Birling’s had which was slightly upper class and is the reason why he never said anything bad to Gerald to complain about him because he was his daughter’s (Shiela’s) boyfriend who were looking to get married later on which Birling was very happy about because of th links and people Gerald knows perfect for Birling’s buisness. However when Sheila takes off her ring which Gerald gave him, Birling got very annoyed and worried he would never see Gerald again because of his buisness and arguement he got into with Shiela. He tries to through-out the rest of the play calm down the pair of them to see if Sheila would put the ring back on.

Q

What is noticable in Mr & Mrs Birling arrogance, disrespect & hate through-out the play towards the lower class of people?

A

Through-out the play it’s very noticable for the audience to realise that the two adults in the Birling household are very arrogant and disrespectful towards lower class people just because they were one class above them and don’t have to work as much as lower class people have to to earn their bread on the table. This was also anticipated when they were comparing thier homes to the lower classes who didn’t have a lot and had to work to earn money which creates a really negative and hatred mood towards Mr & Mrs Birling from the audience.

Q

Why does Gerald take a walk outside the Birling’s house at one point in the play?

A

This was because when the Inspector arrived and gave the Birling’s news which they were very confused about. Gerald was one of the people who knew Eva Smith who died and was shocked because he had spent time with her and took a walk around the side of the house which lead him being out of the play for quiet a few scenes. This is why it lead to Shiela taking the ring of her finger after recieving some shocking news about Gerald cheating on her from in the past.

Q

What do see towards the end of the play from the younger generation compared to the older generaton?

A

The younger generation towards the end of the play showed a great sense of maturity, awareness, character & had a positive effect I think towards the audience in a way they looked at the younger generation from the start which changed drastically towards the end when recieving important information from the Inspector compared to the older generation. It’s as if the younger generation controlled the older generation towards the end by understanding what they committed, accepting & said sorry to what they have and failed to do whereas the older generation always had some sort of excuse or explanation towards something they were guilty of /towards which lead the audience switching their simpaticity towards the younger generation towards the end of the play compared to the olders who would not accept anything theey had committed or done something differently.
