Inspector Flashcards
Inspector
Used as a mouthpiece for priestly political views
Dramatic catalyst
Moral subconscious
Moral teacher
Omniscient
He exposes the immoral behaviour of each character
He places morality above manner, cuts off and ignores social position
The inspector outlined the idea that the way the Birlings treat eva is a crime against humanity and symbolically this sends a potent message about capatalism
‘He speaks carefully, weightily’
Stage directions
Average ‘carefully’ and weightily’ shows that he is selfless and uses forethought before he speaks, directly juxtaposing the idol predictions of mr birling
The semantic field of size ‘massiveness’ and weightily’ imply that his words can’t deeper meaning and have the ability to burden ans affect the listener as displayed with Shiela and Eric
‘The lighting should be pink and intimate until the inspector arrives then it should be brighter and harder’
The next juxtaposition pretending the inspector as the fall (opposite) to the birlings is the contrasting lightening. ‘Pink and immediate’ metaphorically acts to imply that they are caught in their own selfish bubble
The adjectives ‘brighter and harder’ have numerous connotations, one being that the inspector will ‘shine a light’ on the terrible actions and behaviours if the family
Secondly the word ‘harder’ literally means- solid, firm and rigid bit easily broken or with a great deal of effort
Clearly the inspector is not going to be manipulated or intimidated by the social position of mr birling
‘Remember what you did’
Repetition of the imperative ‘remember’ clearly the repetition of this shows that some of the burnings and the upper class will not remember or accept their actions or the consequences
‘Fire, blood and anguish’
Metaphor referring to war
Two world wars- the ruling class did not learn their lessons from the first war and therefore led to the second war
This parallels the death of eva at the start and at the end of the play
Referring to hell, religious, eternal punishment
Does capitalism need to be punished
