Inspection and Codes Ch 12 Flashcards
outside
stem and yoke valve; a
type of control valve for a
sprinkler system in which
the position of the center
Screw indicates whether
the valve is open or closed.
Also known as Outside
Screw and Yoke Valve.
OS&Y Valve
Type of valve used to control underground water mains that provides a visual means of indicating “open” of “shut” positions; found on the supply main of installed fire protection systems. the operating stem of the valve extends above the ground through a “post” and a visual means is provided at the top of the post for indicating “Open” or “shut”
Post Indicator Valve (PIV)
Vertical water pipe used to carry water for fire protection systems above ground, such as a standpipe riser or sprinkler riser
Riser
Waterflow device in a sprinkler system. The sprinkler consists of a threaded nipple that connects to the water pipe, a discharge orifice, a heat-actuated plug that drops out when a certain temperature is reached, and a deflector that creates a stream pattern that is suitable for fire control. Formerly referred to as a sprinkler head.
Sprinkler
(1) Connecting link device that fuses or melts when exposed to heat; used in sprinklers, fire doors, dampers, and ventilators. (2) Two-piece link held together with a metal that melts or fuses at a specific temperature.
Fusible Link
Device for measuring temperature in which two electrical conductors of dissimilar metals such as copper and iron are joined at the point where heat is applied.
Thermocouple
Pump used to maintain pressure on a fire protection system in order to prevent false starts at the fire pump
Pressure Maintenance Pump
Valve installed at standpipe connection that is designed to reduce the amount of water pressure at that discharge to a specific pressure, usually 100 PSI
Pressure-Reducing Valve
Building that requires fire fighting on levels above the reach of the departments equipment. The IBC defines a high-rise building as one greater than 75ft in height, but other fire and building codes may define the term differently. Also Known as High-Rise.
High-Rise Building
Pressure exerted by a stationary column of water, directly proportional to the height of the column
Head Pressure
The main fire alarm system component that monitors equipment and circuit’s, receives input signals from initiating devices, activates notification appliances, and transmits signals off-site. Formerly called the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP)
Fire Alarm Control Unit (FACU)
Device that restricts the flow of smoke through an air-handling system; usually activated by the building’s fire alarm signaling
Smoke Damper
Signal given by a fire detection and alarm system when there is a fire condition detected
Alarm Signal
Signal given by a fire detection and alarm system when a monitored condition on the system is off-normal
Supervisory Signal
Signal given by a fire detection and alarm system when a power failure or other system malfunction occurs
Trouble Signal
Alarm system that alerts and notifies only occupants on the premises of the existence of a fire so that they can safely exit the building and call the fire department. if a response by a public safety agency (police or fire) is required, an occupant hearing the alarm must notify the agency
Protected Premises System
Alarm system that transmits a signal to a constantly attended location(central station) operated by an alarm company. Alarm signals from the protected property are received in the central station and are then retransmitted by trained personnel to the fire department alarm communications center
Central Station System
Fire alarm system owned and operated by the property owner
Proprietary alarm System
System in which alarm signals from the protected premises are transmitted over a leased telephone line to a remote receiving station with a 24 hour staff; usually the municipal fire departments alarm communications center sending an alarm signal to the FACU
Remote Receiving System
System that connects the protected property with the fire department alarm communications center by a municipal master fire alarm box or over a dedicated telephone line.
Public Emergency Alarm Reporting System
System that notifies occupants of a dangerous situation and provides information and instructions
Mass Notification System (MNS)
Semiconductor made of substances whose resistance varies rapidly and predictably with temperature
Thermistor
Alarm-initiating device designed to actuate when visible or invisible production of combustion (other than fire gases) are present in the room or space where the unit is installed
Smoke Detector
Type of smoke detector that uses a small light source, either an incandescent bulb or a light-emitting diode (LED), to detect smoke by shining light through the detectors chamber: smoke particles reflect the light into a light-sensitive device called a photocell.
Photoelectric Smoke Detector
