inside the Earth Flashcards
Lithosphere
The solid outer layer of the Earth that consists of the crust and the rigid upper part of the mantle
Asthenosphere
The soft layer of the mantle on which the tectonic plates move.
Mesosphere
the strong, lower part of the mantle between the asthenosphere and the outer core; Also the layer of the atmosphere between the stratosphere and the thermosphere and in which tempature decreaes as altitude increases.
Inner core
is the innermost geologic layer of the planet Earth. It is primarily a solid ball
Outer Core
is the third layer of the Earth. It is the only liquid layer, and is mainly made up of the metals iron and nickel, as well as small amounts of other substances.
Seismic Wave
A wave of energy that travels through the Earth and away from an earthquake in all directions.
Oceanic Crust
is the uppermost layer of the oceanic portion of a tectonic plate
Continetal Crust
is the layer of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks that forms the geological continents
Density
The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the suntance.
Alfred Wegener
He was a German polar researcher, geophysicist and meteorologist.
Continental Drift
The hypothesis that states that the continents once formed a single landmass. broke up and drifited to their present locations
Convergent Boundary
The boundry formed by collision of two lithospheric plates
Divergent Boundary
The boundry between two tectonic plates are moving away from each other
Transform Boundary
The boundry between tectonic plates that are sliding past eachother horizontally
Sea-floor Spreading
The process by which new oceanic lithosphere forms magma rises toward the surface and soldifies
