Insects Gas Exchange Flashcards
What does an open circulatory system mean?
The blood does not remain in the blood vessels at all time
What is insects ‘blood’ referred to as?
Body fluid
What is a spirical?
A respiratory opening in the exoskeleton of the torax and abdomen of the insect
How does air move through the insect?
Spirical-> Tracheae-> Tracheoles-> Tracheal fluid
Where does air enter the insect?
The spiricals
What are the tracheae’s and what do they do?
They’re tubes in the tracheal system that transport air into the body
Where does the gas exchange occurs?
between the air that’s in the tracheole and the fluid
What happens to the oxygen after gas exchange?
the oxygen will diffuse into the respiring cells that are bathed in the body fluid
What adaptations do the tracheoles have?
Their walls are very thin which reduces diffusion distance
What is the tracheoles system?
It supplies air directly to all the respiring tissue
What are the tracheoles?
The trachea divide into smaller tubes called tracheoles and the end of them are open and filled with tracheal fluid
How are the tracheae giving support?
By a polysaccharide called chitin
What is the thorax?
The middle segment in the insects body (controls the wings and six legs)
What does the movements of the wings cause?
The volume of the thorax decreases which puts the air in the tracheal system under pressure
What happens if the pressure is greater in the tracheal system than the atmosphere?
The air moves with the pressure gradient and out of the tracheal system
