Insects and Mites Flashcards
Describe 5 types of insect pests:
Leaf-chewing insects, sucking insects and mites, gall forming insects and mites, root-feeding insects, shoot stem branch and trunk borers
Identify the 2 major insect life cycles:
Complete metamorphosis
Incomplete metamorphosis
List 7 insect management strategies
no action, genetic, cultural, sanitation, physical/mechanical, biological, pesticides
Define Arthropod:
Invertebrate animal characterized by a jointed body limbs and usually a hard body covering that is molted at intervals. Insects, Mites, and Crayfish
Define Borers
Insects that feed inside the trunk, branches, or roots of plants
Define Gall
Abnormal growth of leaf, stem, or twig tissue caused by the presence of a gall-making organism
Define Insects
arthropods with a body divided into three parts, with three pairs of legs and usually with four wings
Define Complete Metamorphosis
Insect life cycle with four stages; egg, larva, pupa, adult. The larvae generally look very different than adults
Define Incomplete Metamorphosis
Insect life cycle with three stages; egg, nymph, adult. Nymphs look similar to adults
Define Parasitoids
insects that lay their eggs on or in the bodies of their hosts. The larvae that hatch slowly consume the host until it is killed
Define Pollinators
Insects that carry pollen from one flower to another
Define Predators
Insects that capture and devour prey
