Insect Vocab Flashcards
Parasite
Any organism which lives on or inside another organism as well as obtains nutrients from and is detrimental to host organism
Pest
Organisms which competes for resources or can be dangerous to another organisms health
Insect
Members of the phylum Arthropoda which have an exoskeleton. Three body segments, three pair of jointed legs, compound eyes and two antennae
Phylum
Primary subdivision of taxonomic classification; below kingdom and above class
Predator
Any organism which preys on other organisms
Chewing Insects
Insects which chew holes in leaves and cause damage to plants; mouthparts include mandible , maxilla and labium
Sucking Insects
Insects which insert piercing and sucking mouthparts into leaves and suck juices causing damage to plants; mouthparts include proboscis and style
Metamorphosis
Transformation of an organism from larva to adult stage
Pupa
Inactive stage of development between larva and adult stages
Cocoon
Silky envelope spun by the larvae of some insects to cover themselves during metamorphosis
Nymph
Larva of an insect with incomplete metamorphosis
Vertebrate
Any organism possessing a spinal column composed of segmented bones known as vertebrae
Nematodes
Free living or parasitic worms with elongated and rounded bodies; important decomposes of the soil
Ectoparasite
Parasite which lives inside the host plant tissue
Weeds
Any unwanted or undesirable plant which competes with desirable plants nutrients water and sunlight
Pesticide
Chemical used to kill pest
Suckers
Shoots which rise from a plants root system
Insecticides
Chemical used to kill insects
Integrated Pest Managment
Strategy used to control pests by the most economical process with the least amount of possible hazards to humans and the environment
Crop Rotation
Practice of growing different crops on the same land over a period of several growing season; aids in insect control and preservation of soil quality
Narrow Range Oils
Highly-refined petroleum oils sprayed on the surface of plants to control insects and mites
Floating Row Cover
Material used to cover plants and protect from harmful insects while allowing plants to breathe and absorb moisture and sunlight
Crop Yield
Measurement of the total amount of a crop harvested; expresses as a ratio amount planted to amount harvested
Larvae
Immature for. Of an insect; often wormlike
Exoskeleton
Exterior protective structure of insects
Vascular Tissue
Contains the xylem and phloem which conduct both water and nutrients throughout plants
Stolen
Horizontal branch from the base of a plant which produces new plants for buds at its tips
Thatch
Layer of dead grass between actively growing grass and soil surface
Xylem
Vascular tissue in plants which transports water and nutrients up the plant from the roots
Phloem
Vascular tissue in plants which conducts food throughout the plant
