what is an in request?

A

At in request, witnesses are called: eg person who found the body, medics or police. They then give evidence and are questioned by the coroner. The family of the victim are allowed to question them.
they are held to investigate unexplained deaths- eg suicide. find out what happened, not who to blame

what happens after a person dies?

A

1- body examined by pathologist for evidence of the cause of death
2- when examination complete, coroner formally opens in request and sets date
3-family can now bury body

What is Rule 11, of the coroners in request 2013 rules act?

A

states in requests must be held in public.
also states court can accept written evidence from a witness eg doctor, where evidence is uncontested or witness cannot attend.
this evidence must be read aloud by coroner, and state witnesses name.
suicide notes never read.

What does access to case material mean?

A

the media has the right of access to case material, relevant to an inrequest eg- video, images, audio
MEN, successfully argued for CCTV footage of death of Yousef Makki

IPSO guidance on in requests?

A

states the press must not include detail when reporting suicide. IPSO clause 5, and Ofcom Rule 2.5 also are there to minimise risk of copycat suicide

A

certain in requests may be held with a jury
eg- violent or unnatural death in custody
or death through armed services or a workplace death
