Inquiry, Earth, + Sun Flashcards
Inquiry
Asking questions to make + test discoveries
Iteration
Repitition of a product (multpile models)
Criteria
Standard for judging/goal
Constraint
Limiting factor
ex. time + materials
Observation
Detected with senses
1. Qualitative - quality
2. Quantitative - quantity
Inference
Drawing conclusions based on observations
Scientific Method
- Probelm
- Research to hypothesize
- Testing
- Analyze
- Conclude + Communicate
Hypothesis
- Educated guess
Includes:
1. Manipulated variable
2. Responding variable
3. Reasoning
Manipulated/Independent Variable
You change this variable on purpose
Responding/Dependent Variable
Measuring the result
Control Variable
Kept the same for accuracy
Why is inquiry important?
Questions can lead to discoveries + inventions
Rotation
- Spinning on axis
- Earth spins on “rotation axis” (poles)
- Result: day/night
- Time: 24 hours
- Direction: counterclockwise or west to east
Revolution
- object (Earth) moves around another object (Sun)
- Result: year
- Time: 365.2 days
- Direction: counterclockwise or west to east
Tilted Axis
- Earth’s axis tilted 23.5 degrees
- North pole tilted toward Polaris (North Star)
- Reason why earth’s orbit not perfect
Curved Surface
- More direct light at equator = warmer
- More indirect light at poles = cooler
Solstice
- Winter and summer
- Dec. 21 and Jun. 21
- Opposide in N. hemi. + S. hemi.
- Longest daylight hours OR shortest daylight hours
Equinox
- Autumn and spring
- Sept. 23 and Mar. 21
- Equal night/day hours
Seasons
Refer to Sun and Earth notes for diagram
How are seasons caused?
Earth’s rotation axis (tilt) and Earth’s motion
Rotation axis - different parts of area recieves rays
Motion - shows both hemispheres towards sun
