Input/Output Devices Flashcards
Define output device
An output device is any device that displays, plays or prints the results of processing operations or status messages related to that processing.
Define Hardcopy
Hard copy is permanent printed output from the computer.
Define softcopy
Soft copy is a temporary form of output, as produced by a Visual display unit or audio output device.
Define Input device
An input device is a hardware device designed to send data and instructions into a computer system
The two types of input devices
Direct Entry and Manual Entry
Define Direct Entry
process during which data is directly entered into a computer with little or no user intervention.
Define Manual Entry device
a process during which data is entered into a computer by a user.
Define input medium
An input medium is the material, means or mechanism used to convey the data from its source to the computer system
Define printer
a output device that produces tangible visual information from the computer
Define impact printer
Impact printers produce output by employing a striking or hammering mechanism
Define a dot matrix printer
A dot matrix printer produces output one character at a time by striking an inked ribbon on paper to create the impression.
Define non impact printers
Printers that uses spray/toner powder and special paper to print one line/page at a time
Types of impact printers
dot matrix
daisy wheel
band/train
types of non impact printers
inkjet
laser jet
plotters
thermal
Inkjet printer
a non impact printer that uses a cartridge that will spray the ink unto the paper
Thermal Printer
a non impact printer that uses heat on chemically treated paper to form characters
laser printer
a non printer that uses toner or/and heat bars to print
Plotters
special purpose output device that draws with pens for graphics, building drawings
Daisy wheel
a printer that uses a petal and a fixed wheel to form characters and only one font can be printed at a time
Point of Sale system
a combination of input and output devices that allow the business operators to perform more efficiently
Touch terminal
(also called a touch-screen) is operated by touching the display screen to select an option or icon. The screen senses the position of
the pressure applied to the screen, so a touch-screen can replace a mouse for simple applications
Barcode Reader/Scanner
a specialised optical mark reader that ’visually’ interprets barcodes. This data capture device scans barcodes and with specialised software, converts them into machine-readable data.
Specialised Keyboard
a keyboard that has no set keys but can be programmed to preform a variety of functions. These can consists of symbols, words or even pictures
OMR
An optical mark reader (OMR) senses the position of marks made on a preprinted form and converts them into meaningful data. There is no keying-in of data.
Optical Character Reader
An input device that scans and reads characters such as letters she numbers
Magnetic Ink Character Reader
a automated data entry device commonly used in backs to examine data from cheques
