input, output and storage devices Flashcards
input device
A peripheral device which allows the user to interact with the computer
Output Device
A peripheral device which allow the user to interact with the computer
Storage Device
Any computer hardware which is used for either temporary or permanent storage of data
What are the main types of storage?
Magnetic, Flash and optical
What is magnetic storage?
Use of magnetisable material to read magnetic patterns of platters that run mechanically at high speeds
What is a benefit of magnetic storage?
It is high capacity at a low cost
What is a drawback of magnetic storage?
Noisey and suseptible to damage
What is flash storage?
- Data is stored on memory chips
- Can have contents overwritten/erased when electrical charge is applied
What are some benefits of flashstorage?
- No moving parts = less power
- High read/write speeds
- Less Space & Run silently
What are drawbacks of flashstorage?
It is extremely expensive
What is optical storage?
Using a laser which reads the disc by looking at its reflection
What is a benefit of Optical Storage?
It is cheap and resiliant
What is a drawback of Optical Storage?
It cannot be read if it is scratched
What is RAM?
- Random access memory
- Volatile memory used to store the running programs of the computer
What is ROM?
- Read Only Memory
- Small memory which can only be read
- Stores BIOS here
- Non Volatile
