Input, Output and storage Flashcards
What’s a Input Devices
“Any peripheral device that can accept data, presented in the appropriate machine-readable form, decode it and transmit it as electrical pulses to the CPU”
What’s an Output Devices
“Any peripheral device that translates signals from the computer into a human-readable form or into a form suitable for reprocessing by the computer at a later stage.”
What is optical storage?
Uses a laser and by looking at the discs reflection determines where there pits on the surface representing 0’s and 1’s
Eg: CD’s, DVD’s, and Blu Ray discs
Advantages and Drawbacks of optical storage. (+/-)
+cheap
+resilient
-Limited storage
What is Flash storage?
Uses a special type of ROM that be overwritten
Eg: SSD’s
advantages and drawbacks of flash storage (+/-)
+ Read and write very high
+No moving parts = versatile
+Consumes less power
-expensive
-each storage location has limited number of read and writes
Can’t be defragmented due to how often data is being read and written
What is virtual storage?
Virtual storage is cloud storage
advantages and drawbacks of virtual storage (+/-)
+Large amounts of storage available
+Auto back ups
+Stored ‘off site’ meaning it will be safe even if main system brakes
-You cannot ensure Its security
What is magnetic storage?
Patterns of magnetisation used to represent binary sequences eg: Hard disk drive
advantages and drawbacks of magnetic storage (+/-)
+ High capacity
+low cost
-Not the fastest
-Can be damaged if dropped due to moving parts
Give two types of magnetic storage:
Two from:
- Hard disk drive
- Floppy disk
- Magnetic tape
Give three examples of input devices:
Three from:
Keyboard
Mouse
Microphone
Webcam
Touchpad
Barcode Reader
Magnetic stripe reader
etc.
Give an example of a device which is used for both input and output
Touchscreen
What name is given to the areas on a CD’s surface which have been burned into grooves by a laser?
Pits
What does CD stand for?
Compact Disc
