Inorganic Tests and Methods Flashcards
(1) Appearance
Observe colour and state; say whether crystalline or power
(2) Solubility in water
Add a few spatula measures of solid to a test tube of deionised water and shake to mix
(3) Flame test
Testing for the presence of metal cations in the compound
Dip nichrome wire in concentrated HCl
Touch sample with the wire and hold in blue Bunsen flame
(4) Concentrated sulfuric acid
Testing for halide ions
Place a spatula measure of solid sample in a test tube and add a few drops of concentrated sulfuric acid
(5) Silver nitrate solution
Testing for halide ions
Dissolve a spatula measure of the sample in dilute nitric acid and add a few cm3️⃣ of silver nitrate solution
Add dilute ammonia solution
Add concentrated ammonia solution
(6) Barium chloride solution
Testing for sulfate ions
Dissolve a spatula measure of the sample in dilute nitric (or hydrochloric) acid and add a few cm3️⃣ of barium chloride solution
(7) Dilute nitric acid
Testing for carbonate/hydrogencarbonate ions
Place a few cm3️⃣ of dilute nitric acid in a test tube and add a spatula measure of sample
(8) Magnesium nitrate/chloride solution
Distinguishing between carbonate/hydrogencarbonate ions
Dissolve a spatula measure of sample in deionised water and add a few cm3️⃣ of magnesium nitrate/chloride solution
If no ppt appears immediately, boil test tube contents
(9) Potassium thiocyanate solution
Testing for iron(III) ions
Very sensitive
Dissolve a spatula of sample in deionised water and add a few cm3️⃣ of potassium thiocyanate solution
(10) Potassium chromate(VI) solution
Testing for barium ions
Dissolve a spatula measure of sample in deionised water and add a few cm3️⃣ of potassium chromate(VI) solution
(11) Sodium hydroxide solution
Testing for metal cations
Dissolve a spatula measure of sample in deionised water and add a few drops of sodium hydroxide solution
Then add about 5cm3️⃣ of sodium hydroxide solution (adding until in excess)
(12) Sodium hydroxide solution
Testing for ammonium ions
Place a fee cm3️⃣ of sodium hydroxide solution in test tube and add a spatula measure of the sample
Test any gas evolved using damp UI paper or a glass rod dipped in concentrated HCl
(13) Aqueous ammonia (dilute ammonia solution)
Testing for metal cations
Dissolve a spatula measure of sample in deionised water and add a few drops of aqueous ammonia
Then add about 5cm3️⃣ of aqueous ammonia (adding until in excess)
