Inorganic Reactions Flashcards
Colour of Vanadium different oxidising states?
Yellow, Blue, Green and Violet
MnO4 + 5Fe²⁺ + 8H⁺ (colour)
Mn²⁺ + 5Fe³⁺ + 4H₂O (colourless -> pink)
Cr 6+ used as a catalyst has an orange colour when oxidised what colour is Cr3+?
Green
What is a Homogeneous catalyst?
Are in the same phase as the reaction species. Change in oxidation states
What is an example of homogenous catalyst?
S₂O₈²⁻ + 2Fe²⁺ → 2SO₄²⁻ + 2Fe³⁺
2Fe³⁺ + 2I⁻ → 2Fe²⁺ + I₂
S₂O₈²⁻ + 2I⁻ → 2SO₄²⁻ + I₂
What is a Heterogeneous catalyst?
are in two different phases to the reaction species.
How does a heterozygous catalyst work?
Adsorb one or more reactants on the surface. Partially filled d orbital that accepts electrons causing weak bonds with the reactant. The bonds between adsorbed reactant and the catalyst break and new bonds form to make a product
How does heterozygous catalyst slow down?
Catalyst can become blocked by impurities, when forming strong bonds catalysts becomes poisoned.
What is the cataylst used in the Haber process?
Iron Catalyst
What is the catalyst used for making methanol?
Chromium (III) oxide Cr2O3
What is an autocatalysis?
When one of the products of a reaction acts as a catalyst for the reaction.
2MnO₄⁻ + 16H⁺ + 5C₂O₄²
→ 2Mn²⁺ + 10CO₂ + 8H₂O
Mn2+ acts as a catalyst
