Inorganic Part 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Transition metal definition
A
A transition metal is one which forms one or more stable ions which have incompletely filled d orbitals.
Scandium and zinc cannot be transition metals as they have completely filled d orbitals.
2
Q
Properties of transition metals
A
- formed coloured ions
- form complexes (with ligands)
- have variable oxidation states
- show catalytic activity (related to oxidation states)
3
Q
Oxidation involves a _______ in oxidation state
A
Increase
4
Q
Reduction involves a _______ in oxidation state
A
Decrease
5
Q
Ligand definition
A
Electron donors and may be negative ions or molecules with non-bonding pairs of electrons
6
Q
Coordination number definition
A
Th number of bonds from the ligand to the central metal ion
