INORGANIC I Flashcards
group 1 metals are called?
alkali metals
UNUSUAL properties of alkali metals (lithium, sodium, pottasium)
- soft (cut w knife)
- low MP and BP
- Low density
alkali metals react with water to form?
alkaline solution - hydroxide of the metal + hydrogen gas
why do alkali metals react more readily as the RAM increases?
- RAM increases meaning more electrons
- more electrons means more shells (more electron shielding)
- outermost electrons are really far from the nucleus
- not attracted to the nucleus as strongly
- therefore they are lost easily
group 7 elements are called?
halogens
all halogens are … elements
diatomic
halogens generally have … melting and boiling points - they have strong bonds …
but weak bonds …
- low
- within the molecules
- between each molecule
as the RAM of a halogen increases…
- the state at room temperature goes from gas - liquid - solid
- vapour becomes darker
- MP/BP increases
why does the MP/BP of a halogen increase as its RAM increases?
molecules get larger and heavier, harder to break orderly arrangement - stronger intermolecular forces - more energy needed to break
halogens do not occur naturally as elements regularly because…
they are very reactive, they are found combined with metals, in salts
properties of halogens
- soft when solid
- poor conductor of heat/electricity
- low MP/BP
colour/ state at room temp of chlorine + colour of vapour
page green gas + pale green
colour/ state at room temp of bromine + colour of vapour
red brown liquid + orange
colour/ state at room temp of iodine + colour of vapour
dark grey solid + purple
