Inorganic 2 Flashcards
What are the metals in period 3
Sodium, Magnesium and aluminium
What is the semi metal (metalloid) in period 3
Silicon
What are the non metals in period 3
Phosphorous, sulfur and chlorine
What is the noble gas in period 3
Argon
What are the properties of metals
Shiny (when freshly exposed to air)
Conduct electricity
React with dilute acids to give hydrogen and salt
What are the properties of metalloids?
Conducts electricity to an extent
Useful in making semi conductor devices
What are the properties of non metals?
They don not conduct electricity and they have low melting points
What are the properties of noble gases
They are nonreactive and exist as separate atoms
Why are the reactions of elements in period 3 all redox reactions
Every element has an oxidation state of 0 and after it has reacted it ends up with a + or - oxidation state
What is the reaction with sodium and water?
Its vigorous, the sodium floats on the surface and fizzes rapidly
What is the reaction of magnesium with water?
Very slow at room temerture, after some days a few bubbles of hydrogen are formed
What can sodium react with to form sodium hydroxide and whats the equation?
Cold water
2Na+ 2H2O —> 2NaOH + H2
What does magnesium react with more readily to form magnesium oxide and hydrogen?
Steam
2Na + 2H2O –> Mg(OH)2 +H2
When period 3 elements form oxides what do they do?
They form their highest possible oxidation state
What colour flame does sodium produce when it reacts with oxygen whats the equation?
Burns with a yellow flame and forms a white solid.
4Na + O2 –> 2Na2O
2Na2O = white solid
