Inner ear anatomy Flashcards
What are the part of The bony labyrinth (also osseous labyrinth or otic capsule)?
the vestibule, semicircular canals, and cochlea
What are the contents of Vestiule?
the saccule and the utricle
What are the three semicircular canals?
anterior, posterior, and lateral
What the semicircular canals contains?
endolymphatic fluid
What are the three components of osseous cochlea?
- Bony spiral Canal
- Modiolus
- Osseous Lamina
What is the Modiolus?
A central bony core within the cochlea
What an Osseous Lamina?
Thin bony plates- divide the cochlear canal into : scala vestibuli, scala media (cochlear duct), and scala tympani
What are the Boundries of the scala media?
the basilar membrane below and the vestibular membrane (Reissner’s membrane) above.
Where the organ of corti is found?
- cochlear duct (scala media)
What is the structure if the organ of corti?
- Organized along the basilar membrane, containing rows of sensory hair cells and supporting cells
What are the two types of Sensory hair cells?
- Three rows of outer hair cells and one row of inner hair cells
What is the function of outer cells?
- Amplify and fine-tune sound vibrations, enhancing sensitivity and frequency selectivity
What is the function of Inner cells?
- Primary receptors for sound, responsible for converting vibrations into electrical signals
What is the function of utricle and saccule?
- organs of balance which detect movement or acceleration of the head in the vertical( saccule) and horizontal planes ( utricle)
What is the content of saccule and utricle?
- Endolymph
