Inner and Outer Planets Flashcards
What are some characteristics of the Inner Planets?
-Closest to the Sun
-They are dense and rocky
-They have thin atmospheres and small diameters
-These planets have large, solid cores at their centers
-They have few moons
-They have shorter revolution times than other planets in the solar system
What are some facts about Mercury?
-is the closest planet to the Sun
-is the smallest planet in our solar system
-it’s surface is is filled with craters (like our moon)
What are some facts about Venus?
-is very hot
-it’s atmosphere is mostly made up of carbon dioxide
-it has lots of volcanoes
What are some facts about Earth?
-the third planet from the Sun
-allows life to live there
-it’s atmosphere is made of mostly nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide
-has liquid water on the planet
What are some facts about Mars?
-known as the “Red Planet”
-has a red, rocky surface
-has many volcanoes
-has many sand dunes and dust storms
What are some characteristics of the Outer Planets?
-Farthest from the Sun
-They are mostly made up of gas
-They are mostly made of gas
-They don’t have a solid surface
-Their cores are very small
-Their surfaces are much colder than the inner planets
-They have many moons and ring systems
