Innate Immunity - Tutorial 3 Flashcards

1
Q

Name the three lines of defence and classify each as either innate (non- specific) or adaptive (specific) defence

A

First line: innate/non-specific - defences which aim to prevent a wide variety of microorganisms from entering the body.

Second line: innate/non-specific - defences which help eliminate a wide variety of microorganisms which have penetrated the body. Phagocytosis, inflammation, fever, antimicrobial substances.

Third line: adaptive/specific - Helps to elongate specific microbes which have penetrated the body and protect the host against future attack by the same organism. They are called acquired/adaptive because they develop as a result of contact with the microbe.

Q

State the overall functions of inflammation

A
  1. Destroy the microbe (& its end products).
  2. Prevent the spread of the microbe (by building a wall of fibrin around it so it is confined to a local area).
  3. Clear the site of cellular debris and dead microbes
  4. Repair the damaged tissue.

Q

Name and describe the three stages of inflammation

A
  1. Vasodilation and increases blood vessel permeability
  2. Phagocyte migration to the damaged tissue and phagocytosis of bacteria and cellular debris
