Innate Immunity Flashcards
Antimicrobial peptides - Defensins
Produced by neutrophils, NK cells, cytotoxic T cells
Alpha defensins: skin
Beta defensins: resp. epithelium
Paneth cells: produce crytpcidins
Antimicrobial peptides - Cathelicdins:
Produced by epithelia and neutrophils
IL-1
Activates vascular endothelium (Sticky for PMNS) and lymphocytes
Local tissue destruction
Increase access of effector cells
*INDUCES PRODUCTION OF IL-6 (acute phase reactants)
TNF-alpha
Increases vascular endothelium, fever, shock
*IL-6
Produced from IL-1
Lymphocyte activation
Increased antibody production
Fever
Induces acute-phase protein production
IL-8 (CXCL8)
Chemotactic factor that attracts/recruits PMNs, basophils, T cells to site of infection
IL-12
ACTIVATES NK cells
Induces differentiation of CD4 TH cells into
TH1 and TH3
TH1 - take care of intracellular infections
TH2 - required for switching abs
LAD -1
Defect in CD 18 (Beta integrin)
LAD-2
Defect in Sialyl-Lewis molecule
