Learie Constantine
Famous Cricketer, worked for the government during world war 2. He was denied entry into the hotel he had booked in. Sued the hotel and won the case, encouraged others to also sue establishments that treated black people in the same way. He also encouraged others to also sue establishments that treat black people badly.
Justice or injustice?
Learie Constantine
Injustice: as even though he played an important role in government, he was still treated with discrimination.
Justice: as he was able to sue the hotel, but other people of lower status may not have achieved this.
What happened?
Leroy Henry
Leroy Henry asked a white woman for directions but after Henry left, the woman filed a complaint accusing Leroy Henry of rape with no evidence. 30,000 people signed a petition to free Leroy Henry from a death sentence by court.
Justice or injustice?
Leroy Henry
Injustice: huge punishment concluded with no evidence.
Justice: justice was achieved as Henry was eventually freed.
What happened?
Notting Hill Riots
Overcrowding in Notting Hill due to increased immigration after the British Nationality Act, this increased poverty. Violence started by white gang named Teddy Boys. The Teddy Boys started violence in Notting Hill in 1958. The government denied this was a racist incident.
Justice or injustice?
Notting Hill Riots
Injustice: violence against innocent black people and the government did not support these people.
Justice: Eventually 140 white people arrested – slight justice.
What happened?
Kelso Cochrane
Kelso Cochrane murdered by Teddy Boys by being stabbed in the chest 3 times. From the suspicion of the murder no one was arrested. Hundreds of black and white people attended the funeral to show respect and horror at how the murder was delt with. All people of colour, went against Oswald Mosely since he wanted an ‘All white Britain’.

Kelso Cochrane
Justice: very little justice for Kelso Cochrane himself – police did not take the case seriously. Protests following his death, hundreds of white people attended funeral.
However, could argue it was a pivotal moment, causing white people to feel ashamed of the violent racism in their countries.
What happened?
Mangrove 9
A resaurant where black people would meet up. Police would usually search the place for drugs because white people thought that they would most likely to have possession over drugs. The police also searched then Mangrove 9 because Oswald Mosely wanted an ‘All white Britain’, this showed racial injustice towards black people. Owners of restaurant protested and were arrested.

Injustice: More than 2 people were killed and the metropolitan police did nothing about it.
Justice: Case was won by the Mangrove 9 – exposed racism within the police.
Pivotal moment, first successful challenge against racism in British legal history.
