Injuries Flashcards
Concussion
*MILD TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY (MTBI)
1. Causes: direct impact injury, acceleration-deceleration injury, blast injury
2. Symptoms: headache, dizziness, nausea
Contusion
*BRUISE
1. Causes: direct impact that causes blood vessels to break
2. Symptoms: discoloration, swelling, pain
Laceration
*RIP (no skin missing)
1. Causes: direct impact, a blow, blunt force trauma
2. Symptoms: split/stretch/tear in skin
Abrasion
*SCRAPE (skin missing)
1. Causes: friction against surface
2. Symptoms: burn, bleeding
Inflammation
- Causes: overuse, any acute injuries, nutrition
- Symptoms: swelling, dull ache
Sprain
*TEAR (in ligament)
1. Causes: sudden twist of the ligament with a lot of force
2. Symptoms: swelling, popping, feeling “loose”
Strain
*TEAR (in tendon/muscle)
1. Causes: improper warm up, tightness, age
2. Symptoms: swelling, popping, loss of function
Dislocation
*SEPARATION OF BONES AT THE JOINT
1. Causes: excess force on the joint, falling, contact, twisting
2. Symptoms: immobilization
Impingement
*BONES POKING AT SOFT TISSUE (near a joint)
1. Causes: bone directly putting pressure on soft tissue which can cause the bursa to move or rupture, overuse, poor healing
2. Symptoms: pain, weakness
Bursitis
*WHEN SAC BUSTS
1. Causes: the bursa (filled with synovial fluid), overuse, infection
2. Symptoms: pain (when moving joint), stiffness, jelly feeling
Disc herniation
- Causes: the disks in between the vertebras slips, age, twisting, poor technique
- Symptoms: radiating pain, difficulty walking/standing
Tendinitis/tendinosis
*ACUTE vs INFLAMMATION OF TENDON
1. Causes: overuse, load
2. Symptoms: stiffness, weakness, pain
Compartment syndrome
- Causes: pressure building up in muscle which takes away blood supply to muscles, muscle contusion, severe sprain
- Symptoms: severe pain, swelling, tightness
