IM injection sites
Deltoid, vastus lateralis, ventrogluteal muscle
Deltoid average adult
§ Give up to 1 mL of medication with a 5/8 inch to 1 inch needle
Deltoid for preschoolers
For preschoolers and older children use a 5/8 inch needle for IM deltoid
Deltoid for infants and toddlers
DO NOT USE DELTOID for infants and toddlers younger than 3 years
VASTUS LATERALIS: Average adult or adolescent
Give up to 3 ml of medication with a 18-25 gauge 1-1 1/2 inch needle for oil based or viscous solutions
Use a 22-27 gauge 1-1 1/2 needle for aqueous solutions
VASTUS LATERALIS: infants
Infants give up to 1 mL with a 1 inch needle
Vastus Lateralis: small infants
Small infants give up to 0.5 mL with a 5/8 inch needle
