Where is an intramuscular (IM) injection given?
An injection into the muscle mass
Where is a subcutaneous (SC) injection given?
Into the subcutaneous layer above the muscle and below the skin.
Where is the intradermal (ID) injection given?
Into the dermis, the top layer of the skin.
Where is an intravenous administration (IV) given?
Into the vein.
What is the role of the midwife in giving injections?
-To perform the administration of medication by injection in line with professional and legal framework.
-To perform injections in accordance with infection control and sharps safety protocols.
-To ensure informed consent is given by the woman prior to administration to herself or her baby.
-To ensure accurate, timely record keeping of any injection administered.
What are the consideration for midwifery when giving iejections?
Informed consent (challenges during active labour and birth, for the neonate)
Maternal position (gravid uterus, position in labour)
Potential influence of maternal injection administration on the fetus and/or newborn
practical consideration for neonatal administration.
