- Intramuscular (90°)
- Subcutaneous (45°)
- Intravenous (35°)
- Intradermal (10-15°)
Subcutaneous Route
Into the sucutaneous tissue
Only a small volume administration
Best way to do it is to pinch the skin and inject at 45 degrees
Subcutaneous injection sites
- Lower loins
- Back
- Abdomen
- posterior aspect of the upper arms
- Lateral aspects on the loer part of upper arm
- Thighs
For what injections is subcutaneous performed for
Growth hormone
Insulin/ glucagon injections
epinephrine (adrenaline)
Intramuscular injections
Larger volume than subcutaneous
Rapidly absorbed
Given deep into muscle tissue
Needle 90 degrees angle
Green or blue needle

Deltoid - 2-3 fingers below the acromion
Vastus lateralis -thigh

- Cleaning wipe
- Needles
- Syringe
- Gauze/Cotton wool
- Medication/Vial

- ANTT
- Draw up medica&on, required amount
- Replace needle to administer
- Expel Air and surplus med
- Clean site following trust guidelines
- Insert needle quickly and smoothly 90/45 degree
- Give med, then remove needle steadily
- Apply gentle pressure to site
- Dispose of sharps
- Document
Considerations after giving injections
- Observe for any reactions
- Inspect site for bruising or redness
- Discuss any information with parent/carer
- Give any leaflets with advice to parents
