A young Labrador has had a fracture repair to his left fore leg. He is to be administered
X as X
Using the dose rate X mg/kg:
a. Calculate the correct dose of X to be given to this patient.
b. Prepare an appropriate needle and syringe and draw up the correct dose of X.
The examiner will indicate where you need to place syringe in order for it to be
checked.
c. Using the pre-prepared syringe, administer the injection intramuscularly via the quadriceps muscle.
Record the administration of the medication on the hospital chart provided.
Show all your workings including units.
- Using an appropriate methodology, correctly calculate the dose
- Correct units of measurement used for final answer
- Select correct Vetergesic vial
- Check expiry date and date of first opening
- Select appropriate syringe
- Select appropriate gauge needle
- Select spirit and swab/cotton wool
- Assemble syringe and needle using an aseptic technique
- Swab top of vial
- Shake vial to re-suspend the drug
- Introduce needle to vial using an aseptic technique
- Draw back correct volume of drug required
- Withdraw needle from vial
- Change needle safely and dispose of appropriately
- Needle either not re-sheathed OR re-sheathed using safe technique
- Ensure dog is restrained effectively
- Select the appropriate injection site
- Stabilise the injection site with one hand and introduce the needle at right
angles to the skin - Draw back slightly on plunger to check for venepuncture
- Inject drug slowly
- Withdraw needle from the patient
- Massage injection site gently
- Dispose of used needle(s) in medicinal sharps bin
- Dispose of syringe in appropriate container
- Needle either not re-sheathed OR re-sheathed using safe technique
- Record administration of medication fully on hospital chart
- Demonstrate safe, effective and aseptic technique

Bobby is a young Labrador who has had a traumatic wound to his face debrided and
sutured. He is to have antibiotic cover of X as X
a. Using the dose rate x mg/kg, calculate the correct dose of X to be given to this
patient.
b. Prepare an appropriate needle and syringe and draw up the correct dose of X.
The examiner will indicate where you need to place the syringe in order for it to be
checked.
c. Using the pre-prepared syringe, administer the injection subcutaneously. Record the administration of the medication on the hospital chart provided.

- Check expiry date and date of first opening
- Select appropriate syringe
- Select appropriate gauge needle

- Shake vial to re-suspend the drug
- Introduce needle to vial using an aseptic technique
- Draw back correct volume of drug required
