Adequan
Drug Name: Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan
100mg/ml
Used to treat degenerative joint disease in canines & felines
Needs to be given twice weekly for 4 weeks, then once monthly for maintenance
Typically takes 1 month for owners to start to see effectiveness
Can be given SQ or IM
Acepromazine
Drug class: Tranquilizer
10mg/mL
Used for Sedation, pre-anesthetic in canines & felines
Causes hypotension
Can cause sound sensitivity
Caution in use with aggressive patients
Lower doses in collies, sheepdogs, greyhounds, giant breeds - these breeds can be more sensitive to the medication
Can be given SQ, IV, IM
Typically diluted with sterile water
Antisedan
Drug Class: A2-Adrenergic Antagonist
Drug Name: Atipamezole Hydrochloride
5mg/ml
Used for reversal of sedative & analgesic effects of Dexdomitor in canines & felines
Rapidly reverses the effects of Domitor within 5 - 10 minutes
Can be given IM
Ampicillin and Sulbactam
Drug Class: Penicillin
Drug Name: Unasyn
1.5grams per vial - 1g Ampicillin & 0.5g Sulbactam
Typically reconstituted with sterile water (3.2ml) to make 250mg/ml
Can be used for treating a wide variety of infections in canines & felines
Aspiration pneumonia, abscesses, bite wounds, leptospirosis
Great alternative for patients that are not currently eating
Can be given IM or IV
Needs to given IV SLOW over 10-15 minutes
Only good for 72 hours (3 days) after reconstituting medication
Does need to be refrigerated after reconstituting
Atropine
Drug Class: Anticholinergic
Type of nervous system blocker with multiple functions
0.54mg/ml
Typically used for bradycardia in canines and felines
Can also be used for hypersalivation and mushroom toxicity
Can be given SQ, IM, IV, PO
Typically given IV in emergency situations
Bupivacaine
Drug Class: Local Anesthetic
Other Name: Marcaine
0.5% - 5mg/ml
Used as local anesthetic/block for canines and felines
Typically for oral nerve block
Can also be used for spays, neuters, orthopedic surgeries
Can be given SQ
Can cause arrhythmias in high doses
Vitamin B12
Drug Name: Cyanocobalamin
Drug Class: Vitamin
1000 mg/ml or 500 mg/ml
Used to treat cobalamin (B12) deficiency in canines and felines
Symptoms can include - lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss
Vitamin B12 is required for cell growth, function, and reproduction
Can be given SQ & IM
Calcium Gluconate
Drug Class: Cation Nutrient (Electrolyte)
100mg/ml
Used to treat hypocalcemia (LOW calcium levels) in canines and felines
Typically used in clinic patients with acute kidney failure (Urinary obstruction)
Can be given IV
Needs to be given IV slow over 10-15 minutes
ECG needs to be monitored closely for any abnormalities
Cefazolin
Drug Class: Cephalosporin
1g bottle
Reconstituted with 9.6ml of sterile water to make 100mg/ml
Can be used to treat a wide variety of infections in canines and felines
Typically used for orthopedic surgeries, sepsis, foreign body surgery
Can be given IM & IV
Needs to be given IV slow when pt is awake
Only good for 10 days after reconstitution
Does need to be refrigerated after reconstitution
Can administer a 2nd dose in 90 minutes
Cortrosyn
Drug Class: Hormonal Diagnostic Agent
0.25% mg per vial
Drug Name: Cosyntropin
Used as a diagnostic agent to test for hyperadrenocorticism - Addison’s disease - in canines and felines
Very uncommon in felines
Can be used to test for atypical Cushing’s disease
Can be used to check cortisol levels while treating for Addison’s disease
Can be given IM & IV
Recommended to be given IV
Cerenia
Drug Class: Antiemetic
10mg/ml
Drug Name: Maropitant Citrate
Can be used for nausea and vomiting in canines and felines
Can also be used for cystitis (inflammation of the bladder), rhinitis, and coughing
Can have some sedative side effects
Can be given SQ, IV, PO
Does need to be refrigerated after opened
Dexamethasone/ Dexamethasone SP
Drug Class: Corticosteroid
2mg/ml OR 4mg/ml
4mg/ml includes sodium phosphate
Can be used to treat inflammation, autoimmune disorders, diagnostic agent to test for hyperadrenocorticism - Cushing’s disease - in canines and felines
Can NOT be given with any type of NSAID
Can be given IV & IM
Dextrose
Drug Class: Glucose/Sugar
50% solution
Used to treat hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
Can ONLY be given IV
Needs to be given IV SLOW
Dexdomitor
Drug Class: A2 Adrenergic Agonist
0.5mg/ml & 0.1mg/ml
Drug Name: Dexmedetomidine
Used for local sedation in canines and felines
Patients can still be responsive to stimuli - loud noises, movement, etc.
Causes bradycardia, hypotension, respiratory depression
Can be given SQ, IM, IV
Can NOT be given IV in felines
Diphenhydramine
Drug Class: Antihistamine
50mg/ml
Other Name: Benadryl
Can be used to treat allergic reactions in canines and felines.
Can also be used to treat motion sickness and vomiting
Can also be used to help manage overproduction of histamines due to mast cell tumors
Can cause mild sedation
Can be given SQ, IM
Diroban
Drug Class: Arsenical Antiparasitic
25mg/ml
Drug Name: Melarsomine
Used to treat heartworm disease in canines
No current known treatment for heartworm disease in felines
Can ONLY be given deep IM (lumbar epaxial muscles)
Can cause tissue damage or significant toxicity if given SQ or IV
Enrofloxacin
Drug Class: Fluoroquinolone
Other Name: Baytril
22.7mg/mL
Can be used to treat skin infections, UTI’s, soft tissue infections, respiratory infections in canines and felines
Can be given IV & IM
Has to be diluted 1:10 and given IV SLOW over ~10 mins
Epinephrine
Drug Class: Alpha and Beta Agonist
1mg/ml
Used to treat anaphylaxis and cardiac resuscitation in canines and felines
Causes direct stimulation of the heart increasing the heart rate and contractility
Can prevent or decrease laryngeal edema, hypotension and shock
Can be given SQ, IM, IV
Can give multiple doses in emergency situations
Furosemide
Drug Class: Diuretic
Other Name: Lasix; Salix
50mg/ml
Used to treat fluid buildup due to conditions such as congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema and certain kidney diseases in canines and felines.
Helps remove water from the body, causing patients to have excessive urination
Can be given IM, IV, SQ, PO
Gentamicin
Drug Class: Aminoglycoside Antibiotic
Other Name: Gentocin
100mg/ml
Can be used to treat UTI’s, soft tissues infections, abscess, etc. in canines and felines
Can be Ototoxic and Nephrotoxic
Can be given IM, IM, SQ, PO
Glycopyrrolate
Drug Class: Anticholinergic
0.2mg/ml
Typically used to treat bradycardia in canines and felines
Can also help with hypersalivation
Longer acting than Atropine
Can be given IV, IM, SQ
