Initialisms Flashcards
AC
Area Conservationist for NRCS - Soil Conservationists at NRCS are responsible for working with landowners through conservation planning and assistance designed to benefit the soil, water, air, plants, and animals that result in productive lands and healthy ecosystems.
ACP
Agriculture Conservation Program (replaced with EQIP)
AgNPS
Agricultural Non-Point Source Pollution Model (AGNPS) is a joint USDA - Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and - Natural Resources Conservation Service system of computer models developed to predict non point source pollutant loadings within agricultural watersheds.
AOI
Area of Interest (for Web Soil Survey)
BMP
Best Management Practices - Best management practices (BMPs) describe ways to manage your land and activities to mitigate pollution of surface and groundwater near you. These practices are usually simple and low tech, and benefit your household and land in many ways.
CCRP
Continuous Conservation Reserve Program - The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) offers a variety of options for agricultural producers and private landowners to invest in the long-term well-being of their land and natural resources.
The Continuous CRP provides additional opportunities for producers and landowners to enroll in the program.
These include the CLEAR30 Initiative, the State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement (SAFE) Initiative, the Farmable Wetlands Program (FWP), and the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP).
The CLEAR30 Initiative provides producers and landowners with the chance to enroll in 30-year CRP contracts for water quality practices.
Through the SAFE Initiative, producers and landowners have more opportunities to participate in the program.
The FWP allows landowners to enroll land in CRP as part of their efforts to restore previously farmed wetlands and wetland buffers.
The CREP was updated to reduce barriers and make the program more accessible to a broad range of producers and new types of partners.
For the first time ever, three Tribal Nations are now partnering with USDA to help conserve, maintain, and improve grassland productivity, reduce soil erosion, and enhance wildlife habitat.
CED
County Executive Director , FSA
CIG
Conservation Innovation Grants - Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) is a competitive program that supports the development of new tools, approaches, practices, and technologies to further natural resource conservation on private lands.
CLU
Common Land Unit - In Farm Service Agency terminology, a CLU is an individual contiguous farming parcel, which is the smallest unit of land that has:
1. A permanent, contiguous boundary 2. Common land cover and land management
3. A common owner, and/or
4. A common producer association.
CNMP
Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan - Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans (CNMP’s) are conservation plans that are unique to livestock and poultry operations. These plans document the practices and strategies adopted by the land owner or operator to address the natural resource concerns related to soil erosion, water quality, utilization of manure, and disposal of organic by-products.
COE
Corp of Engineers - The Army Corps of Engineers provides public engineering services in peace and war to strengthen national security, energize the economy, and reduce risks from disasters.
CRP
Conservation Reserve Program - CRP is a land conservation program administered by the Farm Service Agency (FSA). In exchange for a yearly rental payment, farmers enrolled in the program agree to remove environmentally sensitive land from agricultural production and plant species that will improve environmental health and quality. Contracts for land enrolled in CRP are from 10 to 15 years in length. The long-term goal of the program is to re-establish valuable land cover to help improve water quality, prevent soil erosion, and reduce loss of wildlife habitat.
CSP
Conservation Stewardship Program (NRCS) - Farmers and ranchers are important managers of our shared air, water, and soil resources, and the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) recognizes and rewards this critical role. CSP is an innovative program for working farms, built on the belief that we must enhance natural resource and environmental protection as we simultaneously produce profitable food, fiber, and energy. By providing comprehensive conservation assistance to whole farms, CSP offers farmers the opportunity to earn payments for actively managing, maintaining, and expanding conservation activities like cover crops, rotational grazing, ecologically-based pest management, buffer strips, and the transition to organic farming – even while they work their lands for production.
C/S
Cost-Share Program, DNR The Soil and Water Conservation Cost-share Program was developed to provide financial incentives to help cooperators install erosion-control and water quality protection practices. The program has helped conserve and assure the continued productivity of Missouri’s soil and water resources, saving an estimated 176 million tons of soil and preventing many tons of excess nutrients from entering streams.
Funds for the program come from the one-tenth-of-one-percent Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax, which is voted on by Missourians every 10 years. This tax was last on the ballot in 2016 and passed in every county with a total margin of nearly 80%
CTA
Conservation Technical Assistance - Conservation Technical Assistance (CTA) provides our nation’s farmers, ranchers and forestland owners with the knowledge and tools they need to conserve, maintain and restore the natural resources on their lands and improve the health of their operations for the future.
CWA
Cooperative Working Agreement - Cooperative working agreement means an agreement that establishes exclusive, preferential, or cooperative working relationships that are subject to the Act, but that do not fall pre- cisely within the parameters of any specifically defined agreement.
CY
Current Year contract (Federal)
DC
District Conservationist, NRCS
DNR
Department of Natural Resources (sometimes known as MDNR) - Missouri’s air, land and water resources play an important role in our health and are essential to the environmental and economic vitality of our state. The department aspires to help Missouri citizens thrive by balancing a healthy environment with a healthy economy. The department provides a range of services to help Missouri citizens, communities and businesses protect and improve the air, land and water resources that we all share. The department also provides opportunities to learn more about Missouri’s natural and cultural history at our state parks and historic sites.
EPA
US Environmental Protection Agency
FIP
Forestry Incentive Program - The Forestry Incentive Program (FIP), initiated in 1975 and administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, provided financial assistance for up to 65% of the cost of silvicultural activities on nonindustrial private forest land of generally less than 1,000 acres (405 ha).
FTP
File Transfer Protocol
FO
NRCS Field Office
FSA
Farm Services Agency, USDA (formerly ASCS) - The Farm Service Agency (FSA) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that serves all farmers, ranchers and agricultural partners through the delivery of effective, efficient agricultural programs for all Americans.
FY
Fiscal Year (State July 1-June 30, Federal Oct. 1-Nov. 30)
GIS
Geographic Information System - A geographic information system (GIS) is a system that creates, manages, analyzes, and maps all types of data. GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). This provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every industry. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. The benefits include improved communication and efficiency as well as better management and decision making.
GRP
Grassland Reserve Program (now combined into ACEP) - The Agricultural Act of 2014 repealed the Grassland Reserve Program (GRP) but does not affect the validity or terms of any GRP contract, agreement or easement entered into prior to the date of enactment on February 7, 2014 or any associated payments required to be made in connection with an existing GRP contract, agreement or easement.
