Q

CCRP

A

Continuous Conservation Reserve Program - The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) offers a variety of options for agricultural producers and private landowners to invest in the long-term well-being of their land and natural resources.

The Continuous CRP provides additional opportunities for producers and landowners to enroll in the program.

These include the CLEAR30 Initiative, the State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement (SAFE) Initiative, the Farmable Wetlands Program (FWP), and the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP).

The CLEAR30 Initiative provides producers and landowners with the chance to enroll in 30-year CRP contracts for water quality practices.

Through the SAFE Initiative, producers and landowners have more opportunities to participate in the program.

The FWP allows landowners to enroll land in CRP as part of their efforts to restore previously farmed wetlands and wetland buffers.

The CREP was updated to reduce barriers and make the program more accessible to a broad range of producers and new types of partners.

For the first time ever, three Tribal Nations are now partnering with USDA to help conserve, maintain, and improve grassland productivity, reduce soil erosion, and enhance wildlife habitat.

CRP

A

Conservation Reserve Program - CRP is a land conservation program administered by the Farm Service Agency (FSA). In exchange for a yearly rental payment, farmers enrolled in the program agree to remove environmentally sensitive land from agricultural production and plant species that will improve environmental health and quality. Contracts for land enrolled in CRP are from 10 to 15 years in length. The long-term goal of the program is to re-establish valuable land cover to help improve water quality, prevent soil erosion, and reduce loss of wildlife habitat.

CSP

A

Conservation Stewardship Program (NRCS) - Farmers and ranchers are important managers of our shared air, water, and soil resources, and the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) recognizes and rewards this critical role. CSP is an innovative program for working farms, built on the belief that we must enhance natural resource and environmental protection as we simultaneously produce profitable food, fiber, and energy. By providing comprehensive conservation assistance to whole farms, CSP offers farmers the opportunity to earn payments for actively managing, maintaining, and expanding conservation activities like cover crops, rotational grazing, ecologically-based pest management, buffer strips, and the transition to organic farming – even while they work their lands for production.

C/S

A

Cost-Share Program, DNR The Soil and Water Conservation Cost-share Program was developed to provide financial incentives to help cooperators install erosion-control and water quality protection practices. The program has helped conserve and assure the continued productivity of Missouri’s soil and water resources, saving an estimated 176 million tons of soil and preventing many tons of excess nutrients from entering streams.

Funds for the program come from the one-tenth-of-one-percent Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax, which is voted on by Missourians every 10 years. This tax was last on the ballot in 2016 and passed in every county with a total margin of nearly 80%

GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). This provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every industry. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. The benefits include improved communication and efficiency as well as better management and decision making.

The conservation practice standard contains information on why and where the practice is applied, and it sets forth the minimum planning criteria that must be met during the implementation of that practice in order for it to achieve its intended purpose(s).

The national conservation practice standards should not be used to plan, design, or install a conservation practice. You must have the conservation practice standard adapted and modified by the state in which you are working to insure that you meet all state and local criteria, which may be more restrictive than national criteria.

State conservation practice standards are available through the Field Office Technical Guide (FOTG). If no state conservation practice standard is available in the FOTG, you should contact the appropriate State Office or your local USDA Service Center.

Updated or new national conservation practice standards are released with National Handbook of Conservation Practices (NHCP) notices. Access the NHCP notices in eDirectives.

67
Q

PLSS

A

The Public Land Survey System is a way of subdividing and describing land in the United States. PLSS surveys, which are available for portions of land in 30 southern and western states, are made by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The PLSS typically divides land into 6-mile-square townships. Townships are subdivided into 36 one-mile-square sections. Sections can be further subdivided into quarter sections, quarter-quarter sections, or irregular government lots. PLSS was created to divide parcels of public land; it is not useful for the accurate location of points and should not be confused with coordinate systems like latitude/longitude, UTM, or the State Plane Coordinate System.

For states that have Public Land Surveys:

Almost all historical topographic maps (1884-2006) include PLSS tic marks or gridlines.

US Topo maps published 2009-2012 do not include any PLSS data.

US Topo maps published 2013-present have a Public Land Survey System layer that can be turned on and off.

The National Map Viewer displays “BLM Public Land Survey System (PLSS)”. Use the “Add Data” tool at the top of the map.

For GIS users, PLSS data layers are available through the BLM’s REST service endpoint. An online table shows PLSS Cadastral National Spatial Data Infrastructure (CadNSDI) data set availability.
