Common Approach Path (CAP)
A path which avoids any route possibly taken to and from the scene by the suspect(s) or the victim(s).
What are the basic principles when it comes to the whole crime scene upon arrival (after dealing with informant/witness/victim/perpetrator)?
Freeze, Control, Preserve
Freeze
Keep the scene in it’s original state.
Nothing is to be touched or moved.
Control
Control all movement to and from the scene.
Control all activity in the contained area.
Preserve
Preserve all relevant exhibits.
Setting boundaries

Include the area from which the offender approached, entered & left the scene, including vehicles.
Duties of a scene guard
Freeze, Control, Preserve
Freeze
Freeze the scene so that it remains in the condition in which it was found.
Control
Control people at the scene and those attempting to leave or arrive.
Preserve
Preserve any evidence at the scene that may be destroyed or start to decay in some way.
Responsibilities of scene guard
Include:
Preventing unauthorized people entering (allow no-one access without the authority of the O/C scene)
Record in your notebook details of anyone entering the scene.
Briefing authorized people.
Promptly reporting and recording any suspicious activity.
Avoiding contamination or interference with the scene.
Being aware of any animals and remove them from the scene if possible.
