Inherited Diseases - Cystic fibrosis Flashcards
Define inherited diseases
Some diseases can be inherited from your parents if they carry a faulty gene. These diseases are not controlled by microbes like bacteria but by the genes that you inherit.
Symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis
A thick mucus collects inside of the respiratory system (lungs) and the digestive system. This makes breathing and food digestion difficult and can reduce the quality of life of the individual.
Causes of cystic fibrosis
A recessive gene is responsible for Cystic Fibrosis. You must inherit 2 recessive genes to become a sufferer of Cystic Fibrosis. Two parents that carry the gene can produce offspring that suffer from it.
Genotype of Cystic Fibrosis - CC
Parent that does not carry the recessive gene.
Genotype of Cystic Fibrosis - Cc
Parent that carries one recessive gene-carrier
Genotype of Cystic Fibrosis - cc
Someone that suffers from cystic fibrosis
Gene therapy for Cystic Fibrosis
- potential treatment for cystic fibrosis
- involved inhaling into the lungs the correct gene for mucus production
- gene will enter the cells of the respiratory system, code for the correct proteins and provide temporary relief from symptoms
Negative aspects in relation to gene therapy
- Re-administer
- Temporary
- Only treats cells in the respiratory lining
- Can still pass on cystic fibrosis
Positives
- Non invasive
- Gives relief
- Easy to administer
