Inheritance, variation and evolution Flashcards
Describe what happens during meiosis and compare to mitosis
Meiosis - produces cells with half the number of chromosomes.
Mitosis produces double the amount of chromosomes during duplication.
Describe what happens at fertilisation
Fertilisation - gamete + gamete = offspring
Gamete - half amount of chromosomes so 2 gametes means the normal amount of chromosomes is restored.
Describe how organisms are named and classified in the Linnaean system
It organises organisms by their charateristics and structures into the group.
Kingdom → Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species
Binomial naming system → Genus + Species e.g. Homo sapiens
Describe and interpret evolutionary trees
Explain how scientific advances have led to the proposal of new models of classification, inc three- domain system
