Inheritance and Genetics Flashcards
What is a monohybrid cross?
A breeding experiment involving a single characteristic
What is the most common monohybrid cross ratio?
3:1
What is a Test Cross?
Breeding a phenotypically dominant individual with a known homozygous recessive.
How can the results of a test cross be interpreted?
If all offspring are phenoytpically dominant, then the parent must be homozygous dominant.
If there are any phenotypically recessive offspring, the parent must be heterozygous
What does the Hardy–Weinberg principle predict?
The frequency/proportion of alleles will stay constant from one generation to the providing no mutation/no selection/population large/population
genetically isolated/mating at random/no migration
In humans why are recessive sex linked characteristics more common in males than females (1 mark)
Recessive allele is always expressed in males or
Males have one recessive allele or
Females need to be homozygous recessive or
Y chromosome does not carry a dominant allele
