Inheritance Flashcards
Define chromosome
A linear molecule of DNA wrapped around histone proteins in eukaryotic cells
Define homozygous
Identical pair of alleles at the same locus
Define homologous pair
Pair of chromosomes found in diploid cells that carry the same genes at the same loci
Define phenotype
The observable characteristics that can been seen or tested for that are as a result of genes and the environment
Define allele
A different form that a gene can take
Define Gene
A length of DNA that codes for a polypeptide of functional DNA. It also codes for functional proteins
Define Locus
The position on a chromosome where you find a particular gene
Define Diploid
2 sets of chromosomes (2n)
normal body cells
Define Haploid
(n) one set of chromosomes
gametes
Define Mutation
A change in the DNA base sequence
Define population
Number of organisms of a particular species in a habitat at the same time.
Define heterozygous
Pair of different alleles at the same locus
Define dominant
Only need 1 copy of the allele for it to be expressed in the phenotype (Bb or BB)
Define recessive
Need 2 alleles for it to be expressed in the phenotype (bb)
Define gametes
haploid (n) sex cells
