Inheritance Flashcards
Certain traits are passed from the parents to the children.
Inherited
Features or characteristics that are passed on to you from your parents.
Genetic trait
When certain traits are passed from the parents to the children.
Simple inheritance
DNA-containing body of a cell nucleus that contains all or most of the genes of an organism.
Chromosome
In everyone’s blood, people have different types, goes from generation to generation.
DNA
Work was different because he did experiments on plants, and designed those experiments very carefully.
Mendel
Female reproductive system.
Ovum (egg)
Male.
Sperm
When a baby is starting to form.
Fertilisation
A sex chromosome, two of which are normally present in female cells.
X Chromosome
One of the two sex chromosomes in humans and other mammals.
Y Chromosome
A change or slight difference in condition, amount, or level.
Variation
A unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring.
Gene
Two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome.
Allele
Having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes.
Homozygous
Two different alleles of a particular gene or genes.
Heterozygous
One allele is expressed and the effect of the other allele is masked.
Dominant
Occurs when an organism inherits a pair of recessive genes from its parents.
Recessive
Chemical composition of its DNA.
Genotype
Observable and measurable characteristics of an organism. It is the physical expression of one or more genes.
Phenotype
Square diagram used to predict the genotypes of a particular cross or breeding experiment.
Punnett Square
A form of inheritance where two alleles of the same gene are expressed roughly equal amounts in an organism.
Co-dominance
Lack of dominance in either of two different alleles in heterozygotes, so phenotype is intermediate between that of homozygotes for either of the two alleles.
Incomplete dominance
