Inheritance Flashcards
What is DNA?
DNA is the molecule that contains the instructions for growth and development of all organisms
What is the genome?
The genome is the entire set of DNA instructions found in a cell.
What does a genome contain?
A genome contains all the information needed for an individual to develop and function.
What is a gene?
A length of DNA on a chromosome that codes for a specific protein.
Where are chromosomes located?
The nucleus of a cell.
What is mutation?
mutation is a rare, random change in genetic material that can be inherited.
What causes genetic variation in offspring?
Random fertilisation.
Why does random fertilisation occur?
Because there are no two egg or sperm cells that are identical so no two siblings can be identical.
What is a diploid?
A cell containing two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.
Diploid number in human cells?
46
What is a haploid cell?
Haploid refers to the presence of a single set of chromosomes in an organism’s cells.
In humans, only the egg and sperm cells are haploid.
What number of chromosomes are there in a haploid cell?
23
What are the causes of variation in species?
Genetic, environmental or both.
What is an allele?
An allele is a version of a gene.
