Inheritance Flashcards
What are pedigrees?
Graphic representation of how a trait is passed from parents to offspring
What is the principal of independent assortment?
Inheritance of one trait has no effect on the inherited of another trait.
ex: your eye colour (trait#1) is inherited separately from your hair colour (trait #2)
Traits are determined by what on the chromosomes
Traits are determined by the ‘genes’ on the chromosomes.
A gene is a segment of a DNA that determines what?
It determines a trait
Homologous pairs- matching genes- one from which each parents?
One from female parent and one from male parent
Alleles are what?
Different genes (possibilities) for the same trait ex: blue eyes or brown eyes
A gene that prevents the other gene from showing is called
Dominant
A gene that does not show even though it’s present is called
Recessive
What is homozygous/purebred
Both genes of a pair that are the same
If there is one dominant and one recessive it is called
Heterozygous or hybrid
What is a genotype
The combination of genes and organism has ( actual Genetic makeup)
The physical appearance resulting from gene makeup is called
Phenotype
What is the purpose of Punnett square
A top that is used to predict the possible gene makeup of offspring is called a Punnett square
What is monohybrid cross
The technique used to calculate Punnett square possibilities
Name list of types of gene expression
Complete dominance, incomplete dominance, codominance, sex traits and determination
