inheritance. Flashcards
what do genes do?
they code for different characteristics in your body
how many alleles does a person have for every characteristic?
2
what are alleles represented by?
letters
what does genotype mean?
the genetic makeup of an individual
what does phenotype mean?
the observable characteristic of an individual
what does having a dominant allele mean?
the characteristics will always be expressed even if the other alleles are present
what does having a recessive allele mean?
both the alleles need to be the same for the characteristics to be expressed
what does homozygous mean?
when you have 2 of the same alleles
what does heterozygous mean?
when you have 2 different alleles
what is a genetic disorder?
a disease or disorder that can be invited genetically.
what is a carrier?
a carrier is an individual who carries one allele from a recessive disease.
what is a sufferer?
an individual who has 2 copies of a recessive disease
what is a non-sufferer?
it is an individual who has no copies of a recessive disease.
what is a variation?
the differences in characteristics between different species and between members of the same species.
