Inheritance Flashcards
What is heterozygous?
Heterozygous is a genotype which the alleles are different
What is homozygous?
homozygous is a genotype to which the alleles are identical
What are alleles?
alleles are alternate forms of a gene for particular characteristics
What is a genotype?
a genotype is the genetic instructions (in DNA) which are inherited from the parents for a particular gene locus
What is a phenotype?
a phenotype is the characteristics that are physically expressed by an organism
What are homologous pairs?
Homologous pairs are 2 chromosome that have a similar shape size and structure as another like chromosome
What are autosomes?
autosomes are the non sex chromosomes. There are 22 pairs of autosomes
What are sex chromosomes?
chromosomes which determine the sex of and organism. There are only 1 pair either XX or XY
What are sex linked chromosomes?
sex linked chromosomes are located on the sex chromosome, more commonly the X one. Females are typically more like to carry
What is a karyote?
a karyotype is a photograph of the 23 chromosome pairs found in the body
What is recessive?
recessive is when the genotype is present, but the dominant is shown over the recessive. they are only shown when someone is homozygous recessive.
What is dominant?
dominant alleles are the always shown in the phenotype and these are the capitol letters of an alleles
What is co dominance?
co dominance is where one alleles is not dominant over another alleles. Both are shown.
What is incomplete dominace?
incomplete dominance is the blending of alleles
What is a punnet square?
punnet squares are a way to predict the percentage of possible outcomes of the genotype.
