Inhalers Flashcards
What is the droplet size of inhalers?
35-45micrometres
What happens if too much inhaler is taken?
Tremors/ Heart flutters
What are 4 advantages of MDI?
Metered dose inhalers:
- Multidose
- Small
-Widely available
- Fast onset of action
What are disadvantages of MDI?
Good technique is required
80% normally deposited in the oropharynx
Corticosteroids can cause oral thrush
Taste
What is the correct used of MDI?
Remove the cap
Shake the inhaler
Pt should breathe out gently, not fully
Tongue should be placed on the floor of mouth & inhaler placed between the lips, which are closed round the mouth piece
Pt - breathe slowly and deeply through the mouth
Canister is pressed whilst pt continues to breathe
Hold breath for 10 seconds
If second dose required wait 30-60s
What are spacers used for?
In individuals with bad inhaler techniques,
These reduce the particle size and velocity of the inhaler. Reduces the volume of inhaler impacted on the oropharynx.
Why can a spacer not be dried with a teatowel?
It creates a charge within the chamber and causes particles within the aerosol/inhaler to stick to the chamber rather than reaching the lungs pf the individual
What is a nebulizer and what are advants& disadvants?
Aerosols containing particles that are less than 5 micrometres.
A-
Can be put on repeat prescription
Manages dose rate & delivery over period of time
Helps medicine in
D-
Costs
Bulky
Requires professional to clean
What is a long term treatment therapy for COPD?
Oxygen
used for at least 15 hrs daily - relieves hypoxaemia, improves mobility
What is a disadvantage of O2?
Flammable
