pMDI
Advantages: Small, easy to transport, cheap
Disadvantages: Require co-ordination, cold-Freon effect may reduce use (due to propellent)
Breath activated inhalers
Advantages: Do not require as much coordination as pMDI
Disadvantages: Larger to carry, cold Freon effect
Soft mist inhalers
Advantages: Easy use for patients with dexterity impairments, clear dose counter
Disadvantages: Expensive, mainly only available for anti-muscarinic drugs
Dry powder inhalers (DPI)
Advantages: No propellent, does not require coordination for administration
Disadvantages: Young and elderly may not be able to breathe in strongly enough to inhale the powder
Spacer devices
Advantages: Avoids coordination issues, increases amount of drug reaching the lung
Disadvantages: Bulky, medication may deposit within the spacer
