Inhalation Flashcards
What is the function of an anaesthetic mask?
preoxygenation
have to be held on
Which factors affect induction agent?
temperament
allergies
heart/liver conditions
What are the types of injectable agents?
Barbituates- Phenobarbitol (euthanasia) Steroids- Saffan Dissociatives- Ketamine Phenols- Propofol Neuro-active steroids- Alfaxan
What are the properties of propofol?
white substance
works best after pre-med
given slowly to effect
up to 5 mins of action
1 emulsion contains benzyl alcohol (28 days use)
1 emulsion contains soya & egg (no bacteriostat)
What are the properties of alfaxalone?
used for dogs, cats and rabbits
longer induction
better recovery
What are the benefits of a combo & name one?
TDK- torbugesic/medetomidine/ketamine
wide range of species use
mixed in same syringe
reversible with atipamezole (dom)
What are advantages of TIVA?
eliminates environmental contamination
reduced post-op nausea
provides stable anaesthesia plane for airway surgery
not known to trigger hypothermia
What are disadvantages of TIVA?
equipment needed - syringe drivers/pumps
drugs require metabolism for recovery which may be prolonged in hepatic diseased patients
What is the MAC value?
minimum alveolar concentration
concentration resulting in anaesthesia
