figurative language is using a word beyond its literal definition and achive a more complex meaning or strengthen its descriptive effect
simile
a simile is a direct comparison between two, using like or as
metaphore
a metaphore is a between two things , they don’t necessarily have to be alike, but they should male a link in the readers mind. (no extra word as/like is used)
personification
when you give human movements to a thing
hyperbole
an international and obvious exaggeration in order to emphasize or strong feeling
idioms
group of words with a unique meaning that has nothing to do with the definition of the words taken individually
onomatopia
the formation of a word by imitating the sound the thing it refers to.
compound
conjuctions: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
complex sentences
has one independent clause and one dependent
subordinator: as, because, since, after, although, when
relative pronouns: who, that, which
complex compound
A compound-complex sentence is comprised of at least two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. Example: Though Mitchell prefers watching romantic films, he rented the latest spy thriller, and he enjoyed it very much.
