Infrared thermography Flashcards
What is the principle of infrared radiation?
Each body emits IR radiations, whose intensity and spectrum depends on the temperature of the observed object and on the intrinsic characteristics and surface of the object itself
How does infrared thermography work?
A digital thermocamera is used that can process the IR signals received from an emitting body and convert them into thermal maps
How is infrared thermography NDT carried out?
The test consists in measuring the surface temperature distribution of a material in response to a pulse of thermal origin. Any anomalies found in this distribution are indicative of a possible defects.
What are the advantages of IR thermography?
- Contactless
- The measuring range is very wide
What are the limitations of IR thermography?
- requires qualified operators.
- Cannot inspect materials with low emissivity
- high cost
