Infrared Spectroscopy Flashcards
How does infrared spectroscopy work
It is an analytical technique that uses infrared radiation to determine the functional groups present in organic compounds, IR radiation passed through sample where the dif types of bonds absorb the radiation in dif amounts which can be measured and recorded
What does the frequencies of radiation absorbed depend on
Depends on the different bonds/groups present in the sample molecule as these vibrate different amounts which is measured and recorded
What is a fingerprint region on an IR spectrum
A unique range in wave number absorbed for each species which contains tiny different between species
What does a spectrophotometer do
Irradiates the sample with electromagnetic waves in the infrared region and then detects the intensity of the wavelength of the IR radiation which goes through the sample
Three ways bonds between atoms vibrate by
Stretching, bending and twisting
How can an unknown compound be identified
By comparing its IR spectrum to the IR spectrum of a known compound and comparing the intensity of the wavelengths and its fingerprint regions
What type of bonds absorb radiation
Polar bonds, non-polar bonds do not absorb radiation
Axis on an infrared spectrum
Infrared intensity against wavelength
