Infrared radiation Flashcards
What is infrared radiation?
The transfer of energy from one place to another by an electromagnetic wave
What emits and absorbs infrared radiation?
All objects, the hotter it is the more energy it radiates per second
Can it infrared radiation travel through a vacuum?
Yes, yes it can
What happens when infrared radiation hits an object?
The energy is either absorbed which increases its heat or it is reflected
Good absorbers and emitters?
Dark and matt surfaces
Poor absorbers and emitters?
Light and shiny surfaces e.g. The silvering inside a vacuums flask
Uses?
infrared heaters give out infrared radiation to heat a room
PIR’s (passive infra red devices), these can be found as part of home security alarm systems
thermal imaging cameras, police helicopters use these cameras to help find people when flying at night
the silvering on the inside of a vacuum flask helps prevent heat loss from coffee in the flask
