What does Infra mean?
Below, beneath the surface
Who is the choreographer?
Wayne McGregor
Which company performed Infra?
The Royal Ballet
What was the stimulus/starting point?
The title infra comes from the Latin word ‘below’ and the work presents a portrait of of life beneath beneath the surface of the city.
What is the choreographic intent?
Infra is about seeing things below the surface and about people and the choreography has found the pedestrian language which is recognizably human
Name the dance style in Infra and describe some examples of movement:
The dance style used is ‘Contemporary Ballet’and this dance style is distinctive for it’s speed and energy and its hyper extensive movement that push the dancers to the extreme
Describe the physical setting of the piece:
The set designer Julian Opie an 18m LED screen on a black back wall. They also use Over Head Box Lighting to demonstrate the train carriages.
Describe the spatial design that the dancers start onstage in at the beginning of the piece:
The dancer accumulate from the shadows from upstage and the other stands in down stage right and they both join in Pas de deux in the centre.
LED lights play a significant part, describe how it is used:
The LED lights were used to show electronic human like figures walking across the back of the stage. And because infra is about people, the choreography has found a pedestrian language which is recognisably human
Discuss one moment in the work where the music creates tension and state why that moment links back to the choreographic intent:
One moment where the music creates tension is at 23:30-25:00 minutes where the female dancer is seen as being alone as 2 male dancers notice her and the other pedestrians walk past. This creates tension because the music decelerates, and the female dancer dancer uses her facial expressions and gestures to show grief and agony which creates a change in mood. This link to the choreographic intent because infra is about people and using a found pedestrian language which is recognisably human and the 2 male dancers are recognising the woman.
Describe the use of Pas de Duex in Infra and how it enhances the peice:
pas de deux is a dance duet in which two dancers, typically a male and a female, perform ballet steps together and it enhances the peice when they were dancing in over head box lighting because it shows the relation between the 2 dancers and how they complement each other movements
Why do you think ballet dance style choice was suitable for the choreographic intent?
. able the show the human contact through using Pas De Duex and hyperextensive movements
. Wayne McGregor experimented with contrasting the traditional ballet vocabulary with everyday movements such as walking,
running and sitting.
How is lighting used to create interesting effects in the work? And why?
. Revealing and hiding
dancers on stage
. It creates a sense of foreground and background to direct the audience’s attention
. It divides the stage into different areas/scenes for the different vignettes
. used to suggest and change the mood of the piece, particularly the use of colour
(stark whites give high definition, greens
suggest tension, warm oranges create ambience and lift the mood, and cold
blues show pain and grief.)
Name a relationship used in infra and describe how it helps our understanding of the work:
Copy
Identify one moment in the work where dynamics are identified:
Half way through the dance peice where there is a male and female duet they express their movements smoothly whilst complimenting each other and the orange wash create ambiance.
