For non urgent procedures, when should informed consent take place?
In advance of the day of the procedure.

The RCVS Practice Standards Scheme Manual provides that for General Practice, signed consents are required for all procedures, give the five main examples of procedures expressed in the Manual.
Diagnostics, medical treatments, surgery, euthanasia and when an animal is admitted for care.
State the matters that should be considered during the discussion with the client regarding informed consent.
-Nature benefits of procedure,
- likely outcomes and risks,
-do not make assumptions about the clients understanding or financial constrain,
- ## financial estimates,clarification that the diagnosis is tentative subject to further investigation,
-checking if the client has any questions regarding diagnosis treatment and costs,
-informing the client that other treatment may be available outwith the practice.
-Consent may be obtained if there are any deviations from the planned treatment.
If a clients ability to understand is called into question what should you do ?
Advise a family member or friend to be present during the consultation, additional time may be needed to ensure the client has understood everything and had an opportunity to ask questions.
