Informational processing Flashcards
What do cognitive psychologists look at ?
how brain works compared to a computer
First stage of informational processing and comparison to computer
Input : Perceiving sensory information from environment such as sight and sound, registering it then sending it through the brain
- downloading a song
second stage of informational processing and comparison to computer
Encoding : Information is converted into nerve impulses ( e.g. from sound waves to nerve impulse ) where it is recognised by the brain ( nerve impulses travel to auditory cortex in brain where its decoded and converted into what we perceive as sound )
- Computer turns it into a computer code such as binary
third stage of informational processing and comparison to computer
Storage : information is stored in the brain
- save sound on hard drive in a folder
fourth stage of informational processing and comparison to computer
Retrieval : you search memory store for the information you want to recall
- you go into folder and find the song you saved
fifth stage of informational processing and comparison to computer
Output : where information you have retrieved is used in some way
- you play the song on your computer
